A half-century ago, a Polish author wrote a novel about a Hungarian diplomat who works in the embassy in India and falls in love with an Australian. It’s called “Stone Tablets” by Wojciech Zukrowski and — as you can imagine — it spans quite a few languages.
That made the job of translating it into English all the more complicated for Amherst, Massachusetts, writer Stephanie Kraft. The story is based on Zukrowski’s own experience as a Polish diplomat in India in the 1950’s.
