State Senate President Stan Rosenberg is calling for Berkshire Gas to lift a freeze on new service requests in some parts of western Massachusetts. The company put the moratorium in place last year due to what it calls a lack of pipeline capacity.
In a letter sent to Berkshire Gas officials, Rosenberg says he’s concerned the halt could affect economic growth in the region by stalling residential and commercial projects. He says the company needs to have a backup plan should the Kinder Morgan pipeline project, which would cut through a large part of Berkshire and Franklin counties, not become reality.
“Plugging gas leaks, encouraging for conservation, potentially doing lateral lines off of existing pipelines, alternative energy,” Rosenberg says. “So there are a range of things they could potentially do.”
In a statement, a spokesperson for Berkshire Gas says they take the letter from Rosenberg seriously and are reviewing it.
