Springfield’s Catholic Bishop says the church’s level of financial support for Catholic education is ‘no longer sustainable.’
Bishop Mitchell Rozanski’s comments come amid a review of whether to rebuild Cathedral High School, which was severely damaged by the 2011 tornado. Rozanski says church leaders will meet with parents and alumni this week to find a solution.
Rozanski says that solution “can not be based on highly speculative projections, but based on a realistic plan, based on the facts that we know regarding our Catholic population and the economic reality of our community.”
A group that supports rebuilding the school says it’s offered to participate in the meetings, but church officials have not taken them up on the offer. The diocese says a decision on the school will be made in early February.
