A new federal grant will bolster prevention efforts for sexual and domestic violence at Springfield Technical Community College.
STCC plans to use a $300,000 grant from the Department of Justice Office on Violence Against Women to create a new prevention coordinator position and add an on-campus counselor for victims.
“Sexual assault takes different forms, depending on the law, if you want to get technical,” said Shawn de Jong, STCC’s police chief. “While we’re not a four-year institution with [residence] halls, our sexual violence typically takes a different form like indecent assault and battery, unwanted touching, that kind of thing.”
According to STCC’s annual crime report, released this month, there was one incident of domestic violence on-campus in 2015, three reports of dating violence and seven cases of stalking.
