New Hampshire Governor and U.S. Senate candidate Maggie Hassan and at least six other Democrats are returning political contributions from a Boston-based law firm. That’s after the Boston Globe reported the Thornton Law Firm reimbursed lawyers who donated to political candidates.
The Globe and the Center for Responsive Politics reported that partners at Thornton Law donated $1.6 million to mostly Democratic fundraising committees and politicians from 2010 through 2014. The firm then paid the lawyers “bonuses” that were the exact amount of the donations or nearly the same amount.
When a political contribution is reimbursed that can mask who the actual donor is. Experts tell the Globe this is “generally illegal” because it could allow donations above legal limits.
The firm denies any wrongdoing, but the Massachusetts Republican Party is calling for an investigation.
The Globe reports Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren and her PAC have received $129,520 from the Thornton Law Firm’s employees. Warren’s office did not respond to a request for a comment.
