Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern starts the new term in Washington next week. The Democrat from Worcester said he’s ready to fight the incoming Republican administration. But he said if President-elect Donald Trump proposes a good measure, he’ll support it.

In his new book, “The Stages Of Memory: Reflections On Memorial Art, Loss And The Spaces Between,” UMass Amherst professor James Young discussed the challenges facing those tasked with picking the final design for the 9-11 memorial in New York City.
Young, who was on the committee, said the aim was to build an enduring memorial.

After years of dropping enrollment, the Labor Studies Center at UMass Amherst is getting help from the school’s administration. Chancellor Kumble Subaswammy released a three-year plan that includes financial support from labor unions. Subaswammy said he laid out the explicit goals in order to address financial and enrollment issues, and, he said, set the record straight. That’s after public criticism from the labor center’s former director.
The Chancellor said he’s optimistic and committed to the center, which he said differs from mainstream academic departments in a number of ways.

Playwright Milan Dragicevich’s new work, “Refugee,” follows three generations. It’s part personal narrative that the UMass Amherst professor knew nothing about until his mother later in life started revealing her past as a displaced person in the Sinai in World War II.
Dragicevich said the play, which is a musical, is the kind of story he likes to tell: one that jumps in time and space. And that shows how related circumstances can be — even distant and unusual ones.
