Several dozen Massachusetts state lawmakers are pushing to get a proposal creating a so-called “homeless bill of rights” passed before the end of the year.
The bill received a positive report from the Housing Committee last year but has been stuck in the Ways and Means Committee.
Lenox State Representative Smitty Pignatelli is the main sponsor of the proposal. Pignatelli said he and many of his colleagues reached out last week to Ways and Means Chairman Brian Dempsey.
“I, along with 60 of my colleagues, drafted a letter to say, ‘Hey, let’s get this thing rolling. We’ve analyzed it enough. It’s not going to be a cost burden to the commonwealth at all. And let’s try to get this over the finish line before the session ends.'”
The bill seeks to strengthen and protect the rights of homeless people in Massachusetts in several areas, including health care, voting rights and personal privacy.
