A state audit accuses the Massachusetts Sheriffs’ Association of sloppy record keeping when it comes to data on prisoners in county lockups.
State Auditor Suzanne Bump’s office said the association had not posted information on prisoner populations on its website since August of 2011.
The audit also found the association failed to collect data on repeat offenders from some counties and did not submit the number of federal prisoners in county lockups to the state.
The auditor said all that information is important to lawmakers when drawing up policy and budgets.
In its response, the sheriffs’ association admitted to the problems and said some of them have been solved by new computer equipment.
The audit reviewed records from mid-2013 through the end of last year.
