Baystate Medical Center in Springfield announced it is cutting a program that uses non-surgical methods to lose weight, and the program’s patients aren’t happy.
Mary Forkey of Springfield says she lost twenty-four pounds in the program, which included nutrition counseling and the occasional use of medication. She says she’s at a loss for how to continue alone.
“Well I have nothing now. I mean, they were my whole motivation to try and get some weight loss,” says Forkey.
Forkey is one of several patients to sign a petition against the closing, which leaves only a surgical weight loss program at the hospital.
Baystate spokesman Brendan Monahan says the hospital receives more reimbursement from surgery than non-invasive methods like counseling.
“If we weren’t in the predicament that we are with our finances and with the reimbursements and the Medicaid issues, then we would keep it all. But that’s not reality right now,” says Monahan.
The program is set to close at the end of the month.
