Two Springfield police officers are home with their families after being struck by a car during a chase early Tuesday morning.
Police spokesman John Delaney is not identifying the officers, who he said approached a car they believed was involved in an earlier armed robbery and a shooting.
Delaney said the driver ran over the legs of one officer and struck the other one. He said one officer shot at the driver, and both got back in their cruiser and pursued the car until it crashed.
The officers were taken to the hospital and later released.
“Their injuries were serious enough to be excused of duty, but they’re going to be OK,” Delaney said.
He said the driver, 22-year-old Derek Fernandes of Rhode Island, was grazed in the abdomen by the officer’s bullet. Delaney said the department is looking into that shooting, but said he wouldn’t comment on whether it was justified.
“Two officers almost got killed. It’s justified to me, but I’m not doing the investigation,” he said.
Delaney says Fernandes and a passenger are in police custody; a third suspect is at large.
