Early voting has begun across Massachusetts, with at least 288,000 residents taking advantage of the first four days, according to the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s office.
Many towns and cities are offering extended hours for residents to cast their ballots before Election Day.
But in the small Berkshire County community of Mount Washington, Town Clerk Gail Garrett is taking a different approach. She posted a notice on the town’s website, and at the dump, letting Mount Washington’s 126 registered voters know how they can cast early ballots.
“People call me or email me when they want to vote,” Garrett said.
State law requires town clerks to offer early voting during their regular business hours. Since Garrett has no regular business hours, she’s offering this on-call service.
Frankly, I was just thinking to myself it would be really nice if I could do this for everyone, rather than do a thirteen hour day on election day,” Garrett said.
Garrett added that most of Mount Washington’s voters will probably show up on November 8th to vote, because that’s they way that they’ve done it for years.
