Massachusetts Congressman and former Springfield Mayor Richie Neal is declining to wade into the debate over whether the city should reinstate a civilian police commission with hiring and firing authority.
Springfield currently has a community police hearing board appointed by the mayor. However, its recommendations are only advisory with the police commissioner in charge of all personnel matters.
But the city’s response to recent cases of alleged police brutality has prompted calls from city councilors and others to restore what they say is an independent board with teeth. Such a commission was in place when Neal served as mayor in the 1980’s.
“I don’t know enough about it, to be frank,” said Neal when asked if he had faith in the current board. “But I just thought in my time the police commission served as a very good buffer.”
Mayor Domenic Sarno dismissed calls to restore a commission. He said he’s confident the current system will deal sternly with any proven police misconduct.
