A jury in Northampton, Massachusetts, has found Cara Rintala guilty of murder in the first degree for killing her wife, Annamarie Cochrane Rintala.
Rintala burst into tears as the verdict was announced, and as the court clerk polled the jurors one-by-one.
This was the third trial for Rintala. Juries in two previous trials failed to reach a verdict in the 2010 murder.
The case has been widely reported through the years as the first time in Massachusetts a person was charged with murdering their same-sex spouse.
Rintala — who had been free on bail — was immediately taken into custody. She’ll be sentenced next week.
