Twenty-three year old Alexander Ciccolo, the son of a Boston Police captain, is accused of making homemade weapons in his Adams, Massachusetts, apartment. Prior to his arrest, FBI agents had observed Ciccolo purchasing a pressure cooker similar to the one used in the Boston Marathon bombings.
In federal court Ciccolo pleaded not guilty to assault and weapons charges from a year ago, and to new charges brought last week by the U.S. government that he provided “material support” to ISIS, and attempted to use a weapon of mass destruction. Judge Katherine Robertson said since Ciccolo has already been incarcerated for a year, she wants to move the case along.
Ciccolo’s attorney David Hoose says everyone is concerned these things take as long as they do.
“But Mr. Ciccolo, like anyone who’s facing a serious charge… the penalties are extreme,” said Hoose outside the courthouse.
The charges could lead to a sentence of life in prison. Ciccolo appears back in federal court November 29th .
