The Massachusetts Gaming Commission Thursday shot down a casino plan for the city of Brockton in the southeastern part of the state. The vote was four to one. Commission Chair Steve Crosby took to task the design of the project.
“It’s not in my view a destination resort casino in the way that the legislature and we really anticipated,” Crosby says. “That’s not to denigrate it inherently, it’s just that it may not match what we were looking for.”
Some commissioners were also concerned about competition from a casino being built by the Mashpee Wampanoag tribe in Taunton, less than 20 miles from Brockton. If the Brockton plan had been approved, the tribe would have been off the hook for paying state taxes.
