Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker says he agrees with the federal Environmental Protection Agency when it comes to the next phase of cleaning up the Housatonic River.
GE polluted the river with PCB’s decades ago when it ran a factory in Pittsfield. Baker tells WGBH Radio he’s spoken with both the company and the feds.
“GE believes they have a better solution for this than the one EPA wants them to pursue,” Baker says. “I think they think in a court proceeding that will be borne out. I certainly would love to see this issue get resolved and I’m hoping it does get resolved.”
The EPA is standing behind its $600-million plan to clean up the Housatonic. GE, meanwhile, says its proposal would accomplish the same goal. It would also save the company hundreds of millions of dollars. G-E is moving its headquarters to Boston, helped by more than a $100-million in state incentives. The governor has said the company’s move and the Housatonic cleanup should be treated as separate issues.
