For the second time in two weeks, the East Longmeadow Board of Selectman has fired its interim town administrator. This follows weeks of local political turmoil, corruption allegations and leadership changes.
Board Chair Paul Federici acknowledged the board did not properly list the termination on the agenda for its previous meeting. So in a 5-minute meeting Tuesday, he and Selectman Kevin Manley again voted to fire interim town administrator Greg Neffinger
Reached by phone Wednesday, Neffinger says he showed up to work last week and was locked out of his computer.
Amid all of this: East Longmeadow residents actually voted last week to eliminate the town administrator position and the Board of Selectmen, over the next few months.
For his part, Neffinger says under the new town charter, the Select Board has limited power to hire or fire employees. He points to this section of the charter:
“Upon the date of taking effect of this charter on April 13, 2016, the Board of Selectmen shall continue to exercise the executive functions of the town until the Board is abolished, provided that the Board of Selectmen shall neither create nor eliminate any position, neither hire nor terminate any employee or elected official, nor execute or extend any employment contract during the transition, except for matters not admitting of delay.” – East Longmeadow Town Charter
Neffinger — who is the former mayor of West Springfield — would not say if he’s considering legal action.
