In Dudley, Massachusetts, some residents are opposing an Islamic cemetery because they claim their water could become contaminated.
Khalid Sadozai is president of the Islamic Society of Greater Worcester, which bought the land for the cemetery. He says he does not want to speculate that there is another reason behind residents’ opposition.
“They should not be afraid of us, we are just human beings like them. And, I will say as I mentioned [Tuesday] in the Board of Health meeting, that our burial is very similar to the traditional Jewish and traditional Christian burial,” said Sadozai.
Sadozai will meet with Dudley’s Board of Health again to make sure all requirements for the cemetery are met.
Earlier this month, WBUR reported from a town meeting where some comments appeared to be more about religion than groundwater.
