The Short List: Mike Albano Enters Sheriff’s Race, Lord Jeff No More, School Spending

NEPR'S WEEK IN REVIEW

by: Susan Kaplan January 29, 2016

What made The Short List this week?

  • It’s January, the time when many governors announce new fiscal year budgets. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker’s numbers for local aid to cities and towns, spending for schools are garnering criticism.
  • For decades, there’s been heated discussion about using the name of Lord Jeffrey Amherst, who is well known to have called for giving small pox infected blankets to Native Americans. This week Amherst College trustees made some changes to long-standing traditions.
  • The Hampden County sheriff race has a new contender: Mike Albano, a former Springfield mayor and current Governor’s Councilor.
