After nearly a quarter century in the legislature, Massachusetts state Rep. Ellen Story of Amherst is retiring. Story announced Thursday she will not seek another term. She says it was time to give someone else a shot at the job.
“I don’t have mixed feelings about not having to go to Boston every week,” Story says. “I think I will find plenty of things to do without being a member of the Great and General Court of Massachusetts.”
Story’s district includes Amherst, Pelham and part of Granby — a district she calls “perfect.”
“It was a district that I could vote my conscience and still be re-elected, and that’s not true for all of my colleagues,” she says.
Story, who was first elected in 1992, says she wishes she’d been able to pass legislation to address workplace bullying, and a bill to require the labeling of genetically modified foods. She says she’ll continue working on those issues in her final year in office.
Amherst school committee member Vira Douangmany Cage says she will run for the seat.
