Baystate Health says it plans to move most inpatient services at Mary Lane Hospital in Ware to Wing Hospital in Palmer, assuming it gets regulatory approval.
The health system says Mary Lane often has fewer than 10 beds full at a time, so the change would allow more efficiency.
Twenty-five to 30 jobs could be lost. Ware Select Board chair Nancy Talbot says that will be a blow to the former manufacturing town.
“I guess I’m very concerned to know that we’re losing an employer, so to speak, in the town of Ware,” Talbot says. “We are trying so hard to grow our community.”
Talbot says she’s glad Baystate will still offer outpatient services in Ware, but says some local patients who need hospital care can’t travel easily to other facilities.
