Governor Charlie Baker is holding off on judging legislation that would expand pre-Kindergarten offerings in Massachusetts. Early childhood education is a hot topic on Beacon Hill, as lawmakers will hold hearings on a proposal Wednesday.
“I tend to let the process work its way through,” Baker says. “I certainly know that there’s a lot of interest in this issue on our side. There’s a lot of interest in it in the house and the senate and I look forward to see where they go, because there are a number of different options and proposals out there but this is something that’s important, I think, to everybody.”
The bill lawmakers are considering would first fund more preschool classes in schools the state has deemed “under-performing.” Baker spent part of Tuesday touring western Massachusetts. He visited a new Pre-Kindergarten classroom in Holyoke, which is funded by a federal grant.
