The owner and builder of a Palmer, Massachusetts, race track must pay a fine and protect hundreds of acres of land. That’s the settlement reached in an environmental dispute with the state
The Massachusetts attorney general’s office announced the settlement with Palmer Motorsports Park and J. Read Corporation.
During construction of the 2.3 mile track, the AG’s office says wetlands were destroyed and breeding habitats for the Blue Spotted Salamander and the Orange Sallow Moth were damaged. Crews cut down trees and drove heavy machinery where it wasn’t allowed, and filled-in streams to avoid building bridges.
With the settlement, the owner and builder will each pay $125,000. They’ve also agreed to conservation restrictions on 309 acres of land around the track, and will buy an additional 200 acres only to hand it over to the state to protect.
