One of the most popular players in modern Red Sox history will enter the Baseball Hall of Fame this weekend. Pedro Martinez will take his place along other baseball greats in Cooperstown, New York, Sunday.
Martinez, the small, charismatic right-hander with a big fastball to go with his big smile, turned his starts into appointment viewing for Red Sox fans. He won 117 games in his 7 years with Boston. He won the Cy Young Award as the American League’s best pitcher twice during that time and led the Red Sox to 4 postseason appearances. Martinez also was the winning pitcher and Most Valuable Player in the 1999 All-Star game, played at Fenway Park. Next week, Martinez will also have his number 45 retired by the Sox, joining other greats such at Ted Williams and Carl Yastrzemski.
