The personal information of some Amherst, Massachusetts, residents has been compromised through the town’s website.
Those Amherst residents who may have been affected by the data breach received letters recently alerting them to the issue. Town Finance Director Sandy Pooler says the town discovered it in late June.
“This was not an outside hack,” Pooler says. “It’s something about how we had our system set up. We are not aware that there’s actually any adverse consequences to anybody.”
But for affected residents looking to take precautions, the town will provide reimbursement for a year’s worth of credit monitoring.
Pooler says due to state law, he can’t reveal exactly how many people from Amherst had their information exposed. He says only those who received letters from the town were victims of the breach.
