The Massachusetts Cultural Council is calling attention to Governor Charlie Baker’s decision to cut $2 million of the arts agency’s funding. Baker last week cut a total of $162 million dollars in spending from the state’s budget. Cultural Council spokesperson Greg Liakos says its funding has fallen from a high of $19 million 15 years ago.
“We’ve really been working hard since the end of the recession to try to restore funding to get grant awards up to our organizations, communities, individual artists, and youth programs back to where they were,” Liakos says. “This would essentially stop that movement in its tracks.”
After Baker’s cuts, the Cultural Council would receive just under $12 million this year. The Governor’s vetoes could still be overturned by the legislature.
