With the confederate flag coming down in South Carolina Friday, the recent controversy has prompted those in Massachusetts to consider changing their state’s flag.
The Massachusetts flag features a raised sword above the head of a Native American. Tribes throughout the state have battled to change the flag for years now.
John Peters Jr. is a member of the Mashpee Wampanoag, and executive director of the state’s commission on Indian affairs.
“We can compare it to the confederate flag and all of those things that have happened under that flag,” Peters says. “We should have that same discussion here and it’s an ongoing representation of the mentality that we have dealt with.”
Peters says he hopes any new state flag will still feature an indigenous connection.
