Westover Air Reserve Base in Chicopee, Massachusetts, could be home to the next generation of air refueling tankers.
The Air Force says Westover is among four bases being considered to house the KC-46 A Pegasus. The plane can refuel aircraft in mid-air and haul cargo, and it’s more fuel efficient than the current, but aging, fleet of tankers. Lieutenant-Colonel James Bishop says housing the planes at Westover would boost morale and revenue at the base, which is still dealing with federal budget cuts and the loss of half of its C-5 Cargo fleet, affecting more than 300 jobs.
“If the KC-46A’s came here, we’d gain jobs in the form of pilots, boom operators, maintainers, possibly support personnel as well. So it’s good news all the way around,” says Bishop.
The Air Force is also considering bases in Indiana, Oklahoma and North Carolina. A final decision is expected next summer.
