Updated at 11:44 a.m. The Northwestern District Attorney’s office says Bile has been sentenced to 8-10 years in a state prison, followed by 5 years probation. More from the Daily Hampshire Gazette.
The first of four defendants charged with gang-raping a UMass student in her dorm in 2012 will be sentenced today. A jury found Emmanuel Bile guilty on two counts of aggravated rape earlier this week. Daily Hampshire Gazette reporter Rebecca Everett has been covering the trial. She says the maximum sentence bile could receive is life in prison.
“But the state sentencing guidelines recommend eight to twelve years in state prison for someone with no record, and Mr. Bile has no record,” Everett says. “The prosecution hasn’t said what they’re going to ask for, so it could be above that, it could be below that.”
Three more defendants are set to be tried in the case. Everett says their lawyers have not yet indicated if any of them will seek a plea deal.
