Mass. Senator Warren Uncertain About President’s Request For Military Authorization

by: Susan Kaplan February 19, 2015 Springfield, Mass.

Massachusetts U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren is not yet saying how she’ll vote on President Obama’s request for military authorization against ISIS. Warren’s comments came during a visit to Springfield today.

Warren said, “The hardest decision, or one of the hardest decisions, that a Senator makes is to authorize the President to use force.” The Democratic Senator says she’s concerned about ISIS, but also worried about “dragging America into another ground war in the Middle East.” Warren says she expects the Senate to begin working on the President’s request next week.

Senator Warren says she did not discuss the upcoming presidential race during a recent meeting with former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Warren was asked if she’d reassured Clinton that she would not run for president. “We didn’t talk about that,” she said,” what we talked about are the powerful policy issues that face this country right now.”

Warren has repeatedly said she won’t run for president next year. But that hasn’t stopped her supporters. A volunteer from MoveOn.Org presented the Senator with a: Dear Elizabeth please run for President card. The group says it was signed by nine thousand people.

Warren’s visit to Springfield drew a crowd of about 200. Her schedule also included stops in Northampton and Greenfield.
