A substance abuse treatment center for inmates will remain in its rented Springfield facility past an eviction date at the end of this month. That’s according to Hampden County Sheriff Michael Ashe, who oversees the Western Massachusetts Correctional Alcohol Center. MGM purchased the building for its casino development, and sent a notice for the center to vacate the property by March 1st. Ashe says that’s not possible.
“There’s no way in the world we’ll be able to meet that,” says Ashe. “However, we’re all working in a very intense, focused way to try to come up with a plan.”
Ashe says he’s applied for $4 million dollars in mitigation money from state casino regulators to re-locate the center. A statement from MGM says the company respects the importance of the treatment program, and has tried to be as accommodating as possible.
