All three companies slated to receive casino licenses in Massachusetts are spending millions to beat back a ballot question aiming to repeal the state’s expanded gaming law. That’s according to the latest campaign finance reports filed with the state.
MGM Resorts, Penn National and Wynn Resorts don’t want to be shut down before they even have a chance to open their doors in Massachusetts. MGM and Penn National have now contributed about $3.25 million each to a political action committee formed to defeat the ballot measure.
Wynn Resorts had initially said it would be not get involved in the campaigning, but the company softened that stance after it was awarded a license. Earlier this month, it donated just over a million dollars to the effort.
The main anti-casino group is operating on a smaller budget, mostly funded by individual contributions but not all of them small. Alan Lewis, the CEO of a Boston-based travel company, has donated more than $200,000 to support the repeal campaign.
