Casino supporters formally launched their campaign in Springfield Tuesday to oppose a ballot measure repealing Massachusetts’ casino law.
The launch coincided with the broadcast of the first television ad by the Coalition to Protect Mass Jobs, urging voters to reject Question Three. Campaign manager Wooten Johnson says the ads are just one part of the operation.
“We’ve got canvas teams out right now. We’re making volunteer phone calls, we’re pushing yard signs because, frankly, people want the 10,000 jobs that are going to be created here,” says Johnson.
The group is almost entirety funded by MGM and Penn National, both of which have won casino licenses. Wynn Resorts, which won the greater Boston license, said last week it hadn’t decided whether to get involved.
Campaign officials declined to say how much money they plan to spend to defeat the ballot question. According to filings with the state, the group has spent nearly $1.3 million, while repeal supporters have spent nearly $448,000.
