A judge has allowed a third trial to go ahead against Cara Rintala for the 2010 murder of her wife Annamarie at their Granby, Massachusetts home.
The first two trials against Cara Rintala ended in hung juries, and the defendant was released from jail in February — though she’s required to stay in the area. Rintala’s lawyers had asked for the case to be dismissed altogether, arguing that prosecutors do not have sufficient evidence to convict her. But this week Judge Mary-Lou Rup ruled that a third trial can move forward. assistant district attorney Steven gagne says that, after speaking with jurors from the previous trials, the state will put more emphasis on forensic science.
“So that’s why we’ve reached out, for example, to an expert in the type of paint that was used at the crime scene in an effort we think to cover up the crime scene,” Gagne says. “And just not taking anything for granted.”
Rintala’s lawyer David Hoose says the defense team is considering appealing to the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court to dismiss the case.
