As Massachusetts’ legislative session wraps up, lawmakers are still debating how to broaden access to substance abuse treatment. Two versions of a bill get rid of the need for pre-authorization from insurance companies for stays in detoxification facilities. That is if you can even find a bed in Massachusetts. The difference between the bills: the House version provides 10 days of treatment, the Senate bill provides 21 days. A doctors group has objected to both those numbers claiming the bills endorses in-patient detox over other less costly treatments, like Suboxone. Massachusetts Senator Jennifer Flanegan from Leomister says that’s not the case. “Whether you decide to engage in medicine assisted treatment…or whether you try detoxing and completely abstaining from anything, that’s a personal choice,” says Flanegan. She added she believes a compromise will be reached by the time the legislative session ends on Thursday.
