The Senate is set to plow through its annual budget deliberations, members of the Governor’s Council are poised to vet Supreme Judicial Court Justice Ralph Gants in light of his nomination to lead that court, and lawmakers next week are likely to send to Gov. Deval Patrick an election system reform bill and a midyear spending bill.

With conference committees still working over bills dealing with welfare reform, drug compounding pharmacies, mercury product recycling, domestic violence laws and natural gas leaks, House Speaker Robert DeLeo and Senate President Therese Murray are juggling other priority bills with an awareness that formal sessions end in 76 days. DeLeo’s promised bills dealing with gun safety and economic development are still taking shape, but House leaders are getting ready to consider on Wednesday controversial legislation allowing more charter schools in Massachusetts.

DeLeo’s House still also has before it legislation sponsored by Murray to make water infrastructure investments and just received Senate-approved legislation facilitating broader access to substance abuse treatment services in an attempt to address a rash of overdose deaths and the damage that drug-addicted individuals are causing across Massachusetts.
