The Massachusetts Gaming Commission Friday denied the bulk of MGM’s request to alter an arbitrator’s ruling on how much the casino company would owe some Pioneer Valley communities. West Springfield and Longmeadow previously won arbitration rulings over MGM.

The cash pay-outs are designed to offset extra traffic and other costs associated with a Springfield casino. MGM’s lawyer, Seth Stratton, says the company wants money back if those dollar amounts end up being too high.

For example, in West Springfield’s case, Stratton says, “If they’re wrong, all we’re saying is, if the money for Memorial Drive fixes the issue, and there are no impacts, and the impact studies show that…why not give us a credit?”

Gaming commission chair Steve Crosby was unconvinced.

The commission is moving closer to awarding the casino license reserved for western Massachusetts. MGM is the only remaining applicant for that license.
