An arbitration panel assigned to the Massachusetts Gaming Commission has sided with the town of Longmeadow over MGM Resorts. The two had disagreed on a surrounding community agreement tied to MGM’s proposed Springfield casino. The decision means Longmeadow will receive payments totaling over $4.4 million. MGM had offered a total of $1.6 million. Town Manager Stephen Crane says the decision acknowledges the impact of increased traffic coming from Connecticut to the casino site, going through Longmeadow.

“Increased traffic will yield increased accidents, increased alcohol-related incidents, increased speeding. And that is not only going to tie up traffic, in terms of the volume of traffic and congestion, but also increase the demands of our public safety personnel,” Crane says.

MGM previously lost an arbitration ruling with West Springfield. In a statement, MGM says it is disappointed with the decisions and will file objections for the Gaming Commission to consider at its hearing on Friday.
