Don Humason was sworn in Wednesday as a member of the Massachusetts Senate. The Republican from Westfield previously served as a state representative for nearly 11 years. He fills the Senate seat vacated by Republican Mike Knapik, who resigned in August. Humason beat Democrat David Bartley in a special election earlier this month. In his first remarks as a senator, Humason spoke to his constituents.

“Thank you for giving me the opportunity to represent you here in the Senate,” said Humason. “I pledge to work as hard as I possibly can, and do as good a job as possible to represent each and every one of the communities no matter how diverse the needs.”

Humason becomes the fourth Republican in the 40 member Senate. His promotion to the Senate leaves an open seat in the House. Leaders in that chamber have not yet indicated if or when an election will be held to fill the position.
