For President Obama the past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind: They’ve seen him on the precipice of taking the country to war with Syria, only to slow down and seek congressional approval.
The last couple of days brought more high-stakes drama, when a potential diplomatic solution materialized from a seemingly off-the-cuff suggestion by Secretary of State John Kerry, who said the U.S. was willing to back off from its war footing, if Syria gave up its entire chemical arsenal quickly and in a verifiable manner.
Which brings us to this night: Obama will address the country at 9 p.m. ET. He’ll do so as the U.S. and Syria’s best ally Russia try to work out a compromise that would avoid an international military confrontation and as resistance to Obama’s strike plan grows in Congress.
