A Williamstown, Massachusetts man has reached a half a million dollar settlement with two former bishops of the Springfield Catholic Diocese. He pressed charges against them for failing to protect him from sexual abuse by a now defrocked priest.
According to Andrew Nicastro’s lawyer John Stobierski, Nicastro was sexually abused when he was an altar boy, between 1981 and 1985, by former priest Alfred Graves . Nicastro sued bishops Joseph Maguire and Thomas Dupree, alleging they knew of the abuse by Graves, but did nothing to stop him.
Stobierski says he doesn’t think any amount of money is enough for what Nicastro went through.
“But money is the only way our system has in compensating him. So, is it fair and just? Probably not, but it’s as good as he’s going to do at this point.”
Former Bishop Maguire released a statement today in response to the settlement. He says he is, quote, “truly sorry for all that Mr. Nicastro suffered and the hardships it has brought in his life.”
