It wasn't only a lot of snow, it was heavy wet snow, crushing late hardy crops and dragging tree limbs down to the ground, many taking power lines with them. Utility officials say power in some areas could be out for a week. Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick declared a state of emergency Sunday allowing him to mobilize the National Guard to help hard-hit cities like Springfield, Chicopee and Worcester among others. Traffic lights are also out ; many weren't in operation through Sunday evening along Route 9, between Northampton and Amherst. Many gas stations, big box stores and strip malls were closed along the commercially heavy road, but a few stores have their own generators, including a supermarket in Hadley. Sia Petropolis was picking up provisions there. She said she rode out the storm with her mother who lives in South Amherst, and they were still without power.
In Connecticut after Governor Dannel Malloy, declared a state of emergency in his state, he then asked President Barack Obama to declare a federal emergency. The governor said Connecticut residents should expect extensive and long-term power outages — more difficult than during Irene .
