The Massachusetts Senate opened debate on a contentious gambling bill today. The measure proposes the construction of three casino resorts in Massachusetts.
Amherst Senator Stanley Rosenberg has been the Senate's point-man on the issue for the past 2 years. In floor debate Monday Rosenberg focused on the potential for a resort developed by the Mashpee Wampanoag Indian tribe. He supported an amendment that would set up a framework for negotiating a gambling compact between the tribe and the governor.
Opposition to the overall bill quickly surfaced. Senator James Eldridge of Marlboro said the measure would hurt tourism more than it would help. The Senate is expected vote on the bill next week. The House already approved its version earlier this month.
