The English playwright David Hare went to the Middle East in 1997, four years after the Oslo Accords had mapped a glimmer of hope for peace between the two embattled communities. The trip included visits with Jewish settlers in the Occupied Territories, and Palestinians in Gaza and Ramallah. He also visited Jerusalem’s Via Dolorosa, the “way of sorrows” tracing the route Jesus is said to have walked to his crucifixion. The trip inspired a one-man show titled Via Dolorosa, which Hare performed in London and New York. For the next two weekends, the Berkshire Theatre Festival in Stockbridge, Massachusetts, is staging the play. WFCR’s Chris Rohmann saw the production, in which Jonathan Epstein plays David Hare.
