How do you tell the story of war? A new film, The War Tapes, suggests that the best storytellers are on the battlefield. In March 2004, National Guard troops From New Hampshire arrived in Iraq. For the next year, several of them carried with them digital video recorders. The War Tapes is co produced by Steve James, who made Hoop Dreams. The director is Deborah Scranton. She turned down an opportunity to be embed with the unit and instead gave soldiers cameras and trained them how to use them. The stars of the documentary are the soldiers, including Sargent Steven Pink, one the five National Guardsmen who made the war tapes.
