Before becoming president, Gerald Ford said he had no plans to run for that office. And Ford, who became vice-president after Spiro Agnew resigned, also Said he couldn’t imagine pardoning Richard Nixon. He did pardon Nixon, and many political analysts believe anger over the pardon scuttled Ford’s presidential run. Author Barry Werth examines Ford’s first month in office in his book 31 Days: The Crisis that Gave Us the Government We have Today Werth says when Nixon resigned, Ford had just two days to prepare to assume the presidency.
