This month The Interdisciplinary Studies Institute at UMass Amherst held a symposium in honor of African writer Chinua Achebe. The event commemorated the delivery of the author’s internationally recognized lecture at UMass Amherst, “An Image of Africa: Racism in Conrad’s Heart of Darkness” given on February 18th, 1975.
Touching on the impact of those words and their continued legacy, Professor Achille Mbembe delivered the keynote address of the symposium, entitled “Chinua Achebe and the African Century”. Mbembe is a Research Professor at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg), and the author of numerous publications in the field of African studies.
This lecture was given on October 15th, 2015, in the Bernie Dallas Room at UMass Amherst.
