A 600-acre closed school in the Massachusetts hilltowns of Plainfield and Cummington could become a for-profit drug and alcohol addiction treatment center by the end of the summer. That is, if if it gets zoning approval.
Dudley Williams is on the Plainfield zoning board, which meets Wednesday night.
“My impression [is] that it won’t be a large turnout…maybe we’ll have fifty people,” Williams says. “That’s probably, for us, is a large turnout.”
Carla Ness is on the Cummington zoning board, which would also need to approve the special permit request. Ness says she’s looking forward to hearing from residents who live near the site.
“It could bring some tax income to the town, and hopefully, some employment to the town,” Ness says. “But obviously as a zoning board member, we have not made up our mind, and it will all depend on what happens at the public hearing.”
Cummington will hold its public hearing on the center on April 21, 2016.
The Massachusetts Department of Public Health says the nearest detox facility to Plainfield and Cummington is nearly 20 miles away in Pittsfield.
