Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has made only a handful of appearances in the four western counties of the state since he took office in January. And it’s going to be a bit longer before the governor comes back to western Mass.
On May 28th, Baker paid a visit to the AAA office in Hadley, gave the commencement address at Springfield Technical Community College and sniffed around an iconic business in South Deerfield.
“I had no idea you were selling in 67 countries,” Baker said to representatives from Yankee Candle. “It’s a global brand.”
He said his visit to Yankee Candle was to highlight what he called interesting organizations in the Bay State.
“If I have a chance, once in a while, to highlight or shine a light on one that’s doing some interesting and great things, I’ll try and do that,” Baker said. “That’s part of why I’m here.”
But he hasn’t personally highlighted anything in western Massachusetts in nearly three months. Baker was in Springfield last month for Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Sullivan’s funeral services, but made no public appearances or statements.
Asked to comment on Baker’s absence from the western part of the state, the governor’s office pointed to his Lieutenant Governor Karen Polito and her more than two dozen appearances in the area since January. That includes four on Wednesday. Polito says the administration works as a team, to cover the entire state.
“Obliviously I’m from central Massachusetts in a community named Shrewsbury right outside of Worcester,” Polito says. “[It] takes me really a very little bit of time to get here to western Mass. In fact, for the Baker-Polito administration, I’ve adopted western Mass. as an area of the state that’s very important to me, personally.”
Governor Baker’s predecessor, Deval Patrick, often spoke about the importance of getting to the western part of the state during his time as governor. In fact, Patrick made more than 30 public appearances in the region through the first eight months of last year, although many were around weekends, when he would travel to and from his residence in the Berkshires.
As for Baker, a spokesperson says he’s next due in the area in early September.
