UMass Amherst is restricting dormitory access this Super Bowl weekend to prevent the kind of rioting the school experienced in the past. There’s a similar concern out in Seattle, where football fans will cheer for the Seahawks against the Patriots.

When the Seahawks won the Super Bowl last year, the University of Washington saw its share of disturbances. Bonfires, mostly. A couch got crispy. So this year the school will step up security around campus, but has no new rules about dorm visitors, like UMass does.
Washington State University — in the eastern part of the state — is decidedly chill about the whole affair. Spokesperson Rob Strenge says the school’s PAC-10 football games are more of a concern than the Super Bowl.
“When the Seahawks won the Super Bowl last year, we didn’t have any incidents on campus,” he says. “And we don’t anticipate that we’ll have any incidents this year when they win again.”
There you have it. Plenty of confidence from the Pacific Northwest.
